What is backscatter spam
Backscatter spam is not new, but it is making a comeback. Backscatter spam is when spammers redirect bounce, out of office, and challenge and response emails to an innocent third party. Typically done in waves, many users have complained that there have been no signs of this type of spam only to have day where they receive 1,000 of these messages. A period of time may go by where the problem disappears, this can be weeks or even months. Spammers almost always forge the reply address when sending spam. When a spam campaign is launched all the bounces, challenge and response challenges, on vacation messages, and subscription requests bounce back to whatever email address used in the reply to message of the spam. These are often legitimate email addresses of an innocent third party.
